Chayote Gratin

Boiled mashed chayote is cooked in the oven with cheese, butter, milk, breadcrumbs, thyme and onions. Creamy, delicious, great accompaniment to bbq.

Ingredients

  1. 1 kg chayote (chouchou)
  2. 1 small onion, finely chopped
  3. 1 teaspoon garlic paste
  4. 1 tablespoon butter
  5. 1 tablespoon thyme, finely chopped
  6. 100 ml milk
  7. 1/2 cup grated cheese
  8. 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  9. Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Cut the chayote into half, peel, wash and boil until they are tender
  2. Mash the boiled chayote into a smooth purée
  3. In a hot pan add the butter and add chopped onions, thyme and stir fry for 2 minutes
  4. Add the mashed chayote, garlic paste and mix well
  5. Gradually add the milk into the pan and keep stiring
  6. Add some grated cheese and reserve the rest of the cheese
  7. Pour the mashed chayote in an oven proof utensil
  8. Add the rest of the cheese and the breadcrumbs on the mashed chayote
  9. Bake in a preheated oven at a temperature of 180 degrees Celcius for approximately 5 minutes
