Chayote Gratin
Boiled mashed chayote is cooked in the oven with cheese, butter, milk, breadcrumbs, thyme and onions. Creamy, delicious, great accompaniment to bbq.
Ingredients
- 1 kg chayote (chouchou)
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 teaspoon garlic paste
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 tablespoon thyme, finely chopped
- 100 ml milk
- 1/2 cup grated cheese
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- Cut the chayote into half, peel, wash and boil until they are tender
- Mash the boiled chayote into a smooth purée
- In a hot pan add the butter and add chopped onions, thyme and stir fry for 2 minutes
- Add the mashed chayote, garlic paste and mix well
- Gradually add the milk into the pan and keep stiring
- Add some grated cheese and reserve the rest of the cheese
- Pour the mashed chayote in an oven proof utensil
- Add the rest of the cheese and the breadcrumbs on the mashed chayote
- Bake in a preheated oven at a temperature of 180 degrees Celcius for approximately 5 minutes
