Home Made Yogurt
A cheaper and healthier alternative to commercial products, this is a simple way to make creamy yogurt from milk at home without any special equipment.
For about 1 litre of yogurt
Ingredients:
- 1.25 litres of milk
- 1 cup plain yogurt with probiotics (no sugar, not flavoured, use commercial or from a previous batch)
Instructions
- Bring the milk close to boiling point on low heat
- As soon as the milk starts to rise, turn off the heat and allow it to cool
- High temperature can kill the bacteria that turns milk into yogurt, monitor the temperature of the milk by touching the vessel with the palm of your hands
- If it burns your hands or you cannot withstand the heat, it is too hot for making yogurt, allow it to cool further
- When the temperature is lukewarm, pour the milk into a glass or pyrex container
- Add the cup of plain yogurt and stir to mix it well
- Put a lid on the container and wrap it with a large towel to minimize heat loss
- Allow it to sit for 12 hours making sure not to move it
- At this point the yogurt should be creamy and thick, refrigerate for longer term use
- Enjoy with fresh fruits, honey, sugar or as is
Note: You can re-use 1 cup from this batch to make the next
