Home Made Yogurt

A cheaper and healthier alternative to commercial products, this is a simple way to make creamy yogurt from milk at home without any special equipment.

For about 1 litre of yogurt

Ingredients:

  1. 1.25 litres of milk
  2. 1 cup plain yogurt with probiotics (no sugar, not flavoured, use commercial or from a previous batch)

Instructions

  1. Bring the milk close to boiling point on low heat
  2. As soon as the milk starts to rise, turn off the heat and allow it to cool
  3. High temperature can kill the bacteria that turns milk into yogurt, monitor the temperature of the milk by touching the vessel with the palm of your hands
  4. If it burns your hands or you cannot withstand the heat, it is too hot for making yogurt, allow it to cool further
  5. When the temperature is lukewarm, pour the milk into a glass or pyrex container
  6. Add the cup of plain yogurt and stir to mix it well
  7. Put a lid on the container and wrap it with a large towel to minimize heat loss
  8. Allow it to sit for 12 hours making sure not to move it
  9. At this point the yogurt should be creamy and thick, refrigerate for longer term use
  10. Enjoy with fresh fruits, honey, sugar or as is

Note: You can re-use 1 cup from this batch to make the next
